Before you start searching, it helps to know what kind of home you want. Here are the main options you will find on AllForStudents and who they suit best.

Purpose-built student residences (PBSA)

Modern buildings run by professional providers, with en-suite rooms or studios, shared kitchens, study rooms, gyms and on-site staff. Bills and Wi-Fi are usually included.

Best for: first-year and international students who want an easy start and a built-in community. Watch out for: fixed contract lengths (often 40–51 weeks) and higher prices than private flat-shares.

University halls

Run by the university itself or a public student services organisation (such as a Studierendenwerk in Germany or CROUS in France). Often the most affordable option, but places are limited — apply as early as you can.

Rooms in shared flats and houses

Rent a private room and share the kitchen and living room with other tenants. Usually cheaper than residences and more flexible, but you need to check bills, contract terms and your future flatmates.

Rooms in a homeowner’s house

Live with a local homeowner or family. Quieter and often good value, with a chance to practise the language. Ask about house rules and guests.

Studios and one-bedroom flats

Total privacy with your own kitchen and bathroom. The most expensive option per person.

Sublets and lease takeovers

Perfect for one semester or an exchange: take over a student’s room while they are away, or take over the rest of their contract. Always check that the landlord has agreed in writing.

Quick comparison

  • Cheapest: university or public halls, shared rooms.
  • Easiest from abroad: student residences.
  • Most flexible: sublets and private rooms.
  • Most private: studios.
